#Nonbinaryisntwhite

The hashtag #nonbinaryisntwhite has recently popped into my Twitter feed, and I wanted to share it with you. The stereotypical non-binary person is white, thin, androgynous, and able-bodied: basically someone who looks like me. This erases the existence of so many non-binary people. Especially because I fit into this stereotype, I find it essential to show my readers that this is not the only way to be/look non-binary.
Gender as a concept is so much more than what most of us are taught: pink is for girls and blue is for boys, etc. Gender identity is a highly personal, and internal, characteristic that doesn’t necessarily align with gender expression. The story here is to not assume. I hope that by highlighting some of the Tweets from this hashtag all of us will be a little more mindful of when we may be excluding people, not just in the non-binary community, but also more generally.
Below is just a small sample of the many posts from this hashtag. Search for #nonbinaryisntwhite on social media to see more. Also if you have Twitter, follow these cuties, support them (some have venmo in their bio), love them!
